Mott FoundationGrant Purpose - Proposals to mine metals locked up in sulfide-based ores pose a serious risk to the freshwater resources of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In recent years, the state adopted a new set of protective standards governing such mining activities. With this grant, the Sierra Club Foundation, a foundation established to support the work of the Sierra Club and its affiliates, will support the work of the Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club to monitor and participate in the implementation of Michigan's new mining rules and related state and federal policies so that Michigan's freshwater resources are protected adequately.
