Independent Sector Grant

Organization - Independent Sector
Grant Amount - $100,000
Foundation - Mott Foundation
Grant Purpose - This grant provides partial support to Independent Sector for a program to advance nonprofit governance, transparency, and ethical conduct. The Advancing Good Governance and Ethical Practice Initiative is a continuation of the work begun by the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector. The panel was convened in 2004 and issued recommendations aimed at improving the oversight and governance of nonprofit organizations in two reports in 2005 and 2006. Many of these recommendations became law in charitable reform provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Subsequently, the panel appointed an advisory committee that developed the Principles of Good Governance and Ethical Practice Initiative, which was released at Independent Sector's Fall 2007 conference. Through this initiative, Independent Sector will raise awareness of the principles among nonprofit organizations, federal and state public officials, and key members of the media. The initiative will also assist nonprofits in using the principles to evaluate and improve their own governance and management practices.
