"For too long, a lack of money has forced organizations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense," Melinda French Gates says in a statement.
That's why the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $1 billion to fight for women's rights through 2026, including $200 million in grants to US organizations working to protect women's rights, including reproductive freedom, and $250 million to improve women's mental and physical health worldwide, the Guardian reports.
A dozen leaders from around the world are being awarded $240 million in grants to support women's health and well-being.
Lee Badgett, a retired University of Massachusetts economics professor, is one of them, receiving $20 million.
"I'm very honored and excited to partner with Melinda French Gates and Pivotal to further equality for women," Badgett tells the UMass Amherst News.
She's also the closest of the dozen to the LGBTI+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and others who don't identify as cis/hereterosexual), and she's the co-founder of Koppa: The LGBTI+ Economic Power Lab, which aims to create a more equitable global economy for
