Breese Stevens Eyes New Seats, New Playing Surface, to Attract High-Level Sports

Madison, Wis., could soon have a women's soccer team to call its stadium home.

The Wisconsin city's Board of Park Commissioners has approved a $4 million grant proposal that would see the addition of hundreds of new seats, a new playing surface, and locker room facilities at Breese Stevens Field, where men's soccer fans currently stand on bleachers, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The team, which would be the first in the National Women's Soccer League, is expected to join the USL Super League in 2025, per the Journal Sentinel.

Big Top Events, which operates the stadium, has an agreement with the city that allows it to host seven concerts per year, and commissioners approved an expanded calendar of 10 concerts this summer.

"What we've identified as $8 million worth of improvements are what we think it would take in order to address many of the needs it has around maintenance and historic renovation," assistant parks superintendent CJ Ryan tells Isthmus.

Big Top's chief operating officer says the company has invested more than $2.5 million in improvements at the stadium, including a concessions building and more seats, but the $8 million grant wouldn't cover all the improvements needed.
