Robert Redford launched the Sundance Institute's Indigenous Program in 1978 with the stated goal of supporting "indigenous artists and the stories they want to tell through the moving image," per a press release.
This year's class of 10 filmmakers is "marked by works-in-progress that are markedly unique and shaped by their distinct voices," per Adam Piron, the director of the institute's Native Lab in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
"From a purely selfish standpoint, it's witnessing the revelation of these artists, the blossoming of their creative efforts, and the possibilities that their work presents that gets me going each morning at the lab," Piron writes.
"It's as much of a launching pad to reach the next phase of their films as it is a catalyst for their creative practices as filmmakers and Indigenous artists."
The winners of this year's Native Lab will each receive a stipend to produce a feature film or episodic screenplay.
The films will then be screened at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
