Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates wants the world to be "carbon negative" by 2030 and "remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted since it was founded" by 2050.
In a blog post, the company says it's "working hard to make that vision a reality" through "technology innovations like generative AI to global collaboration across the energy industry," as well as through its own efforts, which include "joining other changemakers at CERAWeek 2024 and partnering on a broad range of exciting initiatives."
The post notes that oil and gas production is down 3% to 4% annually, and that energy security is "especially vital" for the 80% of the world's population that lives in developing countries.
"From technology innovations like generative AI to global collaboration across the energy industry, we are working hard to help drive global change and make that vision a reality," the company says.
Microsoft says it's working with Accenture and Duke Energy to develop "a pioneering solution to meet goals for curbing methane emissions and potentially advance industry and regulatory standards."
