Climate Cardinals Plans To Double Its Science Translation Efforts With New Google Backing

Sophia Kianna was cooped up in her Virginia high school for a year as a teen after her parents disapproved of her activismand she's since gone on to found a nonprofit that translates climate change information into more than 100 languages, Forbes reports.

Now, thanks to a $400,000 donation from Google, Climate Cardinals will be able to hire a full-time staff of a dozen people and expand its work in more than 80 countries.

"Because young people stand to lose the most if we fail to combat climate change, youth-led organizations like Climate Cardinals have to be at the forefront of the fight for climate justice," Kianni says in a statement.

Climate Cardinals has been working with Google since 2023, using the company's AI-powered Translation Hub to translate important literature at a faster pace, according to a news release.

In four years, it has translated 2 million words from English into more than 100 languages.

The new funding will allow it to expand that to at least 1 million words per year and as many as 3 million words per year, Hikaru Wakeel Hayakawa, Climate Cardinals' vice president and deputy executive director, tells Forbes.
