"If their mental health is not good, we can have things like, they can get hurt, they can have problems or environmental problems on the river,"Jennie Morehead says.

That's one of the reasons the Emerald Foundation of West Kentucky is launching The Waters Edge, a program that aims to help river industry workers with their mental health and wellness.

"A lot of those folks are on boats 28 days out, and when they come back, they've left their families at home," Morehead tells WDRB.

"Their families are having to deal with real life at home."

That's why the foundation wanted to go into the industry and "go onto barge decks and to places where they work, live, and deal with the river industry and help them with their mental health and wellness," Morehead says.

The Waters Edge will offer support to those who work on barge decks for six hours a day, six hours a day, for 24 hours a day, for a total of 28 days.

The program will also help workers' families as well.
