Don'T Let Grim Headlines Obscure the Progress on Climate Change

"Some people are skeptical when a technology person like me says innovation is the answer," Bill Gates writes in an op-ed in the Washington Post.

"But we won't solve the climate problem without them."

That's because we need to get rid of emissions from every sector of the economy, he writes, and "in a world with limited resources, innovations allow us to magnify the impact of our efforts."

Case in point: We've cut the number of children who die before the age of 5 in public health, he writes.

"Although it's true that global health funding went up, that's not the only reason for the dramatic change," he writes.

"It's also because advances in science and policy drove down the cost of vaccines and made it possible to immunize far more childrenand because the world spent its limited resources on the most effective ways to save lives."

Gates is funding efforts to reduce emissions through his Breakthrough Energy company and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and he lays out some of the innovations he's excited about here.
