Innovation in Maternal Health: Challenges and Opportunities

When it comes to women's health, "there are many reasons to invest in maternal health," the World Health Organization's chief medical officer writes in an op-ed in the New York Times.

"Maternal health plays a crucial role in society, affecting not only the well-being of mothers but also the long-term health of children and communities."

That's why the UN's Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria is investing $50 million in a new initiative called the Inner Circle to spur innovation in maternal health.

The initiative's goal is to work with some of the world's most vulnerable populations, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where more than a third of the world's maternal deaths occur.

Here's what you need to know about the Inner Circle: The initiative is a partnership between the UN, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and Weill Cornell Medical College, where the medical school's chief medical officer is a member, the Times reports.
