Here'S How to Jump into the World of Philanthropy

It's that time of year again: time to start thinking about what you'd like to do with your money.

If you're not sure how to get started, Time has some advice.

First, figure out how much you'd like to donate.

For example, if you're single and not sure how much you'd like to give to a charity, it's a good idea to figure out what your "comfort level" is, says an expert.

If you're new to philanthropy, it's a good idea to do your homework, too.

For example, do you want to meet with the person you're donating to regularly or just once a year? If you're donating online, it's a good idea to use checks instead of credit cards.

If you'd like to learn more about the charity you're donating to, the staff at Cuyahoga Community College's Tri-C Foundation in Cleveland can help.

"When I start a conversation talking to a donor, it’s very often that either the individual themselves or their family member or friend has taken a class, or even graduated," says an official.
