Scientists in Pennsylvania are working to restore the state's rivers with the help of some unlikely allies: beavers.
The Richard Mellon Foundation has awarded a $600,000 grant to the Freshwater Research Institute at Susquehanna University to build a beaver dam on a tributary of the Susquehanna River, reports the Scranton Times-Tribune.
The dam will help reduce sediment in the river, which runs through the university, by creating a habitat for beavers to hunt and breed, reports the Times-Tribune.
The project is just one component of a two-year effort by the Freshwater Research Institute to improve water quality in Pennsylvania's rivers.
It also plans to add tools for community engagement and environmental education.
