Chicago's South and West Sides are getting a boost from the arts as the city prepares for the Democratic National Convention, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
"We have been constantly reimagining space, revitalizing space, and doing our best to give the community what it needs," says Binta Diallo, associate director of arts and culture at Inner-City Muslim Action Network, one of several community organizations that received grants from the Gertie Center for the Arts.
Among the projects: an installation called "This Heavenly Body" that documents the role roller skating rinks play in black communities, as well as an exhibition at a Bronzeville gallery that honors the rinks as important spaces for community connection.
