One of the world's most popular electric-vehicle ride-hailing services is getting a big boost from one of India's most famous sons.
Mahendra Singh Singh Jaggi, former captain of the Indian cricket team, is investing in BluSmart, the country's first and only electric-vehicle ride-hailing service, reports the Times of India.
The company says it has received a $24 million investment from Mahendra Singh's family office, as well as from new investors including Sumant Sinha, chairman of renewable energy company ReNew Power, and Swiss impact investment firm Respons.
BluSmart says it plans to use the money to expand its fleet of electric vehicles and build charging infrastructure in major metropolitan areas in India.
The company says it has expanded its fleet from 70 vehicles to 7,500 over the last year and is now operating in New Delhi and Bangalore.
