Pitt State Grant to Give More Nurses Access to Sexual Assault Training

"I get cards from people who say if it weren't for this program, they wouldn't have the ability to do this, and it's truly changed lives."

Those are the words of Amy Hite, director of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners program at Pittsburg State University.

The Kansas university has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to fund three more years of training for the state's more than 100 sexual assault nurses, the Kansas City Star reports.

"The demand exceeds the number of forensic nurses in Kansas, and many who need care are one to three hours from the services they desperately need," Hite says.

The program began in Crawford, Cherokee, and Bourbon counties and has since expanded to all of Kansas' 105 counties.

The new funding will allow Pitt State to offer advanced degrees in forensic nursing, including a Master of Nursing and a Doctorate of Nurse Practice in Forensic Nursing leadership.

The university also plans to provide free courses in Kansas through 2027.
