Connecting Local Nonprofits and U-M Students for Paid Arts &Amp; Culture Internships

"They're all beautifully inquisitive and arrive eager and ready to learn."

That's how the CEO of a Detroit nonprofit describes five University of Michigan students she's been hosting this summer as part of a program that pairs undergrads with internships in the state's arts and culture industry, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The Culture Corps program is a partnership between the University of Michigan's Arts Initiative and 20 local arts and culture organizations, including the Detroit Public Theatre, InsideOut Literary Arts, the Arab American National Museum, Detroit Opera, and many more.

The goal of the program is "to encourage students majoring in arts and humanities to explore careers in their chosen fields; to provide an entry point for students who may not know how to break into arts and culture careers; and to support the region's vibrant arts ecosystem by sponsoring paid student interns," says Arts Initiative Executive Director Mark Clague.

Laura Scales, CEO of Living Arts Detroit, says she's had five interns so far and all have been "just as incredible as the next."

Living Arts Detroit provides art experiences and arts-integrated education to kids aged 3 months through 18 years.

It offers everything from artist residencies to dance classes to an animation studio and after-school activities, and Clague
