The US Department of Commerce has awarded $19.5 million to a new tech hub in South Florida designed to create 23,000 new high-paying jobs over the next decade.
The ClimateReady Tech Hub is a consortium of local governments, businesses, universities, and organizations, including Miami Dade College, which will receive $6 million to manage the workforce development component of the hub, reports the Miami Herald.
"This significant federal investment will jump-start climate innovation from public, private, academic, tribal, and community partners, positioning South Florida as a leader in adaptation and mitigation technology that can withstand extreme weather events, increased flooding, and rising temperatures," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement.
The hub is one of 12 tech hubs in the country awarded for implementation by the Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration.
