"It's important economically, but it's also important culturally because these are also the places that support our local artists," Melissa Cirone with the city of Sacramento tells KCRA.
Thanks to a new grant program from the city, arts venues in the California capital will be able to apply for up to $25,000 to help with rent, insurance, and other costs.
"They're still struggling with audiences and bringing people in, their costs have increased, rents have increased in the city, insurance costs have gone up," Cirone says.
"The funds can be used for different expenses like rent."
The grants are divided into two types: Rapid Response Grants and Venue Recovery Grants.Eleven businesses will receive $5,000 as part of the Rapid Response Grants.
The $25,000 grants are specifically for live music, performance, and comedy venues; the $10,000 grants are for independent bookstores and art galleries.
The program focuses on businesses located in downtown, Midtown, the Marysville-Del Paso Boulevard, and Stockton Boulevard corridors.
