Northwestern University's Charles Deering Memorial Library, designed by James Gamble Rogers in the Collegiate Gothic style, is about to get a makeover.

The Chicago Tribune reports the nearly century-old building on the Evanston, Ill., campus is getting a $15 million revamp that will see it retrofitted with new furniture, restored woodwork, and modernized lighting and technology.

The library will also get a new elevator and renovated restrooms.

"Once renovated, Deering Library will be a vibrant hub for social and academic life, where students can gather, collaborate, and create lasting memories," says Xuemao Wang, dean of Libraries and Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian.

The library will also get a reading room that's getting rid of its non-original, free-standing bookshelves to make way for more seating.

The project is being funded entirely by philanthropic gifts from six people, including Leslie Cameron Devereaux, Peter McKee, Joan McKee, Sandi Lynn Riggs, and Stephen M.

Strachan.

"This library, built in honor of my great-grandfather Charles Deering, has always held a special place in my heart," says Strachan, chair of Northwestern's Libraries Board of Governors.

The project will also restore the Eloise W.
