Lakewood Division of Aging Touts Timing of New State Grant as Daily Walk-Ins Increase

If you're in your 60s or older in Lakewood, Ohio, you're in good company.

The city's Division of Aging last year delivered 18,244 home meals and served 12,893 meals, reports Cleveland.com.

That's an increase of about 3,600 home meals and more than 1,000 meals per month, or about 5%, over the previous year, according to the department's director.

The reason for the increase? More people are looking for ways to age in place at home.

“We’re seeing more and more people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s,” says director Chad Berry.

“They want to be in their own home and they want to be able to do things at their own pace.” That's why the city is starting a pilot program that will see home-delivered meals delivered to seniors who can't make it to a center on their own.

The effort is expected to last two years.
