Chair of Rural Education at Texas Tech Established by a Generous Donation

Foundation: Brown Foundation

"When you couple that with their commitment to rural education, it became clear the College of Education was the perfect place to house the Prentice Farrar and Alline Ford Brown Foundation Chair of Rural Education," Kelly Garlock of Bank of America tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The $2.5 million gift will establish the chair at Texas Tech University's College of Education, which prepares students to "thrive in the classroom and meet the needs of students in those unique environments," according to a university press release.

The chair, which will be named after the late Prentice Farrar and Alline Ford Brown, will focus on rural education, as well as "leading innovative research initiatives in this area," the press release says.

"The endowment of a chair in rural education ensures that we will be able to continue to impact this region and its future with a new focus and commitment," says Interim Dean of the College of Education Kamau Siwatu.

"We will also strive to ensure that the legacy of the Brown Family is honored in everything we do."

The Brown family has been active in education in West Texas, having founded the West Texas Rural Education Partnership, which prepares more than 200 new teachers per year in rural schools in the region.
