Oxnard Teen Center Named after Nordhoff Graduate Aided by $400K State Grant

When Heidi Allison and her husband, Larry Rhoades, opened Nate's Place a year ago in Oxnard, Calif., they had one goal: to help at-risk teens and young adults stay on the right track with sobriety and mental health.

That goal has just been realized with a $400,000 grant from the state Department of Health Care Services, the Ventura County Star reports.

The grant will go toward payroll for coaches and specialists who work at the center, which currently has seven coaches and 48 students in its boxing, kayaking, fitness, and other programs.

The average age is 16 to 17.

"We're really excited because our services are so critical that we have that ongoing support," says Allison, who named the center after her son, Nate Rhodes, a certified fitness trainer who overcame drug addiction.

The average age at Nate's Place is 17.

"He was super social.

He was always helping out other people," saysaden Skillern, a 22-year-old who went to the same elementary school as Nate and now works at Nate's Place as a peer support coach.
