Westervelt Scholarship Fund Created for Ocracoke Students
Foundation: Outer Banks Community Foundation
When Dr. Frederic Westervelt died in 2023, he left behind a legacy of sorts on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The doctor, who spent 30 years at the University of Virginia in the field of nephrology before moving to the island with his wife, Ernestine, in 2005, has left behind a scholarship fund for college-bound students, the Coastal Review reports.
"We wanted to do something that would be worthwhile and would help the community," Ernie Westervelt says in a statement.
"We loved living there."
Westervelt, who died at the age of 88, was "deeply appreciative of the remote island that allowed him to rest from the chaos of his regular life," his family says, per the Outer Banks Community Foundation, which is administering the scholarship.
The foundation says the fund is "a tribute to the enduring connection of the Westervelt family with the Ocracoke community."
Westervelt's work setting up early dialysis programs and his subsequent commitment to community health "exemplify a life devoted to service," the foundation says.
