Old City Hall Restoration, New General Assembly Building Lead Golden Hammer Award Winners

A 14-story office tower in Richmond, Va., that replaced the state's old Capitol building took home the top award at this year's Golden Hammer Awards for architecture, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The General Assembly Building, which replaced the old Capitol building on the edge of the city's downtown, received the Best Overall award from Historic Richmond and Storefront for Community Design.

Also among the winners: The Old City Hall building, which was restored to its original grandeur after being purchased by the Virginia Department of General Services in the 1990s.

The agency also owns the 67-unit Planet Apartments it developed in the city's East End.

Best New Construction went to VCU's STEM building at 817 W.

Franklin St., a residential conversion next door to a auto repair garage.

Best Rehabilitation went to the renovation of the former Mutual Boy Scouts of America building at 4015 Fitzhugh Ave., which was designed by landscape architect 3North.

Best Placemaking and Urban Design went to the Science Museum of Virginia.
