The town of Aspen, Colo., is in the news for all the wrong reasons this week.

First, the town council voted down a measure that would have made same-sex marriage legal in the town, reports the Aspen Times.

The measure, which would have allowed same-sex couples to marry anywhere in the state, didn't pass because it didn't get the two-thirds majority needed to pass in either the council or the mayor's office.

In a letter to the editor, however, the chair of the town'sIDEA committee thanked the council for its support of gay marriage.

"There is no doubt that the event left a positive impression on the minds of many and demonstrated the best qualities of inclusiveness in our community," she wrote.

"In particular, we would like to thank our lead sponsors: Jeff Grinspoon and Jon Foley, AspenOUT, Aspen Community Foundation, Gay for Good, Sundae Ice Cream, and Mountain Pride.
