"I am someone who had incredible teachers in our schools who believed in me, who pushed harder to ensure that I would succeed," Monique Lim says.
"I am someone who at the core has the belief that investment, human investment, yields community outcomes."
The California state senator and former San Marcos High School athletic director was recently awarded the 2023 Hope Award from the Santa Barbara Education Foundation for her work on behalf of students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District, the Santa Barbara Independent reports.
Jahadhmy, who started working with youth at the Goleta Boys and Girls Club in 1975, began teaching and coaching at San Marcos High School in 1975.
He continued to help student-athletes until his recent retirement.
"Whether it's financially, volunteering, or being there to have empathy for people that need support, that's the most important thing that I could have given," Jahadhmy said when accepting the award.
The foundation raised more than $110,000 for teacher grants at the May 5 event, which also honored former San Marcos High School Athletic Director Abe Jahadhmy.
"We don't forget, ever, the teacher who made an impact on us," Lim said.
"And that is what tonight is about, ensuring that we give the resources to those teachers."
