Robert Martini has been a beach lifeguard in Florida's Sarasota County for 20 years.
He's also been a lieutenant for the lifeguard division for the last three and a half years, making sure local beaches are staffed, first-aid supplies are on hand, and lifeguards are fully trained.
And on June 25, at midnight, he'll be paddling a Surf Skia type of kayak used for lifeguarding competitions and rescuesfrom Bimini, Bahamas, to the mainland of Florida to raise money for charities that help families affected by cystic fibrosis.
"There will be 200 paddlers with safety boats to make sure we get to Florida safely," Martini tells SRQ.
"The event was inspired because of the incredible health benefits of the ocean for those living with cystic fibrosis, a terminal lung disease."
