Phoenix Homelessness: 5,000 Living On Streets, A 33% Rise Over 2020

Foundation: Arizona Community Foundation

More than 5,000 people are homeless on the streets of Phoenix, a "troubling but not unexpected" increase from 3,767 in 2020, per the Arizona Republic.

The annual point-in-time count conducted in January found 5,029 people experiencing homelessness outside of shelter. That's up 33% from 3,767 in 2020.

There wasn't a count in 2021 because of CO-19 concerns.

Experts say the survey is likely a significant undercount because it's difficult to locate all people experiencing homelessness on a single day.

In 2020, for the first time in recent history, more than half of the people counted were not staying inside a shelter and instead slept on the streets, in desert washes, in vehicles, or another place not meant for habitation. This is because metro Phoenix has a severe shortage of emergency shelters. The county has fewer than 2,000 emergency shelter beds, and they are full nearly every night.

Phoenix had the largest number of people experiencing homelessness with 3,096. Mesa and Glendale followed with 451 and 406 respectively. Guadalupe, Sun City, and Glendale saw the largest percentage increases in people experiencing homelessness between 2020 and 2022.
