Some $9.7 million has been donated to 170 nonprofits in Monterey County, Calif., thanks to a community foundation's crowdfunding campaign, the Monterey County Weekly reports.
According to the Salinas Californian, the Community Foundation for Monterey County started the Monterey County Gives campaign in 2000 to raise money for local nonprofits in the weekly Monterey County Weekly. Since then, the campaign has raised nearly twice as much as it did the previous year. This year, $9.7 million has been donated to 170 nonprofits.
"Each year we think we can't possibly beat the previous year's fundraising amount," the Community Foundation's CEO says. "And each year, the staggering $9.7 million. also meant that many people needed help from resources more than they were able to get help from."
The largest donation this year was made to the Food Bank for Monterey County, which received $384,801.
