Tom Peters is stepping down as CEO of Marin Community Foundation, one of the nation's largest community foundations, after 24 years.

The foundation, created in 1986 after a legal battle over a $435 million charitable fund, distributed more than $2 billion in grants and increased its assets from just over $900 million to $3.7 billion during Peters' tenure, ranking it the 10th largest community foundation in the US, reports the Marin Independent Journal.

Peters, who will be replaced by board member and former San Francisco Supervisor Shirlee Zane, says he's leaving to spend more time with his family and to pursue other philanthropic opportunities.

The 61-year-old says he's leaving the foundation in good shape, with more than 500 families having established donor-advised funds with the foundation, which allows them to consult with the foundation about how their contributions are used while receiving an immediate tax deduction.

"Politics is a blood sport in San Francisco," foundation board member and former Rep.

Jim Meredith tells the Independent Journal, adding that Peters' political skills were developed during the AIDS crisis, when he was a volunteer with the San Francisco AIDS Task Force.

Peters, who has been with the foundation since its founding, says he has no plans to run for public office.
