The Duke Endowment association has awarded a $450,000 grant to the Health Foundation Wilkes Health Action Team, based on both the great need for health services in the area and the capability of the Wilkes Health Action Team. With North Carolina being ranked 31st in overall health of its citizens, the Health Foundation is moving rapidly to form a committee to decide what to do with the funds and how to most effectively disburse them.
Heather Murphy, the executive director of the foundation, has placed a strong emphasis on community health and cooperation, stating that the success of the initiative depends on strong local involvement at all levels. In order to better achieve this vision, Murphy has connected with over 50 local community leaders to maximize their efforts to increase health in their communities.
