2024 Public Forum on Global Chinese Philanthropy

When the University of California, Los Angeles, teamed up with China's Nankai University last year to host a forum on Chinese philanthropy in the US, it didn't set out to create a forum on Chinese philanthropy in the US.

But that's exactly what happened, the Los Angeles Times reports.

According to the forum's website, the goal of the Global Chinese Philanthropy Research and Training Program is to "foster passion and interest in volunteerism, stimulate innovative research ideas, and encourage the sharing of best practices related to Global Chinese Philanthropy."

The forum is scheduled to take place in Beijing on June 7 and will feature a panel of philanthropists, scholars, and practitioners who will "discuss and share their experiences from a variety of perspectives," according to the forum's website.

The Times reports the forum is the first of its kind in the US, and it's part of a larger effort by UCLA and China's Asia Pacific Center to better understand Chinese philanthropy in the US.

According to the forum's website, Chinese philanthropy has grown from a small cottage industry in the 1990s to a multi-billion-dollar industry with major players such as state-owned oil company PetroChina and Wanda Group, which owns the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers.
