Rex Charity Announces $1.3 Million to Aid Education Causes in New Orleans

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a group of local business leaders created the Pro Bono Publico Foundationand since 2006, it's given more than $14 million to education causes in New Orleans, the Times-Picayune reports.

On Saturday, the foundation announced it had awarded $1.3 million in grants to schools and nonprofits, the ninth consecutive year it's given more than $1 million.

"This is truly one of our favorite days of the year," said James Reiss III, a member of the foundation's board and a former king of Mardi Gras.

Most of the grants went to local charter schools, but the foundation recently created a "strategic innovation fund" to make bigger, multi-year grants to address systemic education challenges, the Advocate reports.
