Laveen Elementary School Wins Sprouts' On-Campus Garden Giveaway

Cash Elementary School in Phoenix is one of 24 schools across the US to receive a new school garden as part of the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation's 24 Gardens in 24 Hours in 24 Communities campaign.

Volunteers will build the gardens at the schoolswhich were chosen from more than 3,000 nominationson Saturday, Sept.

23, the Arizona Republic reports.

"These schools represent 24 incredible communities, comprised of teachers and students, that will now have access to an outdoor garden, where classroom lessons can be brought to life through hands-on learning," Lyndsey Waugh, executive director of the foundation, says in a press release.

The foundation, which launched in April to celebrate Earth Month, has granted $18 million to more than 400 nonprofit partners focused on advancing children's nutrition education and school-based gardening programs.

Three social enterprises were recognized at the 2013 President’s Challenge Social Enterprise Award for their major contributions to society.
