Creativity Crisis: How Budget Cuts and Overpriced Creative Suites Stifle Young People

"It doesn't matter if the end goal is to create a vaccine or a logoyou're still looking for insights, making connections, playing, solving problems, which is in a nutshell," says the founder of Nottingham Trent University's School of Art and Design.

"Creativity is a vital part of education for all students, not just the ones who show innate skills."

Indeed, according to a survey of 4,000 teachers by EdTech UK, a quarter of them say students' enjoyment of school is being negatively affected by a lack of creative opportunities, and 18% say insufficiencies in creative subjects are negatively impacting students' mental health, the Telegraph reports.

"It doesn't help that some people, including pupils, believe that creative skills cannot be taught," says EdTech UK's Nick Birch.

"It can negatively impact other sectors, such as engineering, hospitality, teaching, and IT, since key skills like problem solving, critical thinking, and coming up with innovative ideas may not be developed fully."

Indeed, between 2010 and 2022, the number of students taking design and technology courses dropped 42%, according to EdTech UK, and the number of students taking creative subjects dropped 40% between 1995 and 2012.
