In an effort to make health care more affordable and accessible, the UK is creating what it calls "the world's first integrated development and approval process for medical technologies."
The process, which is expected to be in place in the second half of 2023, will be a joint effort by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and a number of other organizations, including the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Guardian reports.
The goal of the process is "to advance cutting-edge technologies and solutions within the National Health Service by reducing ambiguity in the pathway to medical accessibility by introducing groundbreaking technologies to patients, thereby revolutionizing health results," the MHRA says in a press release.
"The new IDAP will demonstrate how the UK regulator, health technology assessment, and the healthcare system are working together to deliver safe, effective, and earlier innovative medical products to patients, establishing the UK as a center for medical innovation," the MHRA's chief science and innovation officer says.
