The Alpha Foundation announced the first $10 million of the $48 million to universities and research institutions for mine research.
Sixteen research proposals have been approved. Virginia Tech and Northeastern University are some of the winners of the grants. The only non-academic winner in the first round is the United Steelworkers, which will focus on identifying and controlling hazards in metal and non-metal mines.
