The terms used in this taxonomy arise from the United States context in which there is a palpable distinction made between grantmaking ("philanthropy") and non-grantmaking ("nonprofit") organizations.
While these categories may be less appropriate for describing the work of infrastructure organizations working in other countries, this research is nonetheless valuable for civil society organizations.
