The Criminal Justice System has been struggling with increasing populations in jails for a long time. Some cities, including Charleston SC, have received grants from the MacArthur Foundation, which should allow them to decrease the population of criminals in prison while improving the methods used to rehabilitate those who commit crimes.
Charleston has recently received 2.25 million dollars to aid in meeting this goal. The jail system is largely overused in the United States. Grants like this one will dramatically help lower the in jail population by funding educational efforts so that people understand the purpose, and condition of jails. Using these grants is projected to reduce the population of prisoners in the Charleston County by 25% over the next three years.
