Being a fund raiser is one of the least appreciated jobs in the nonprofit world. Many nonprofit organizations are increasingly becoming more like for profit companies and when budget cuts occur fund raisers are one of the first to go. The average fundraiser only gets about 2 years out of one job before having to move on.
The challenges that face fundraisers are more than economical. The industry itself is cut throat. There is much disagreement about how clients are treated and claimed, and the structure of most fund raising campaigns allows for little trade off of clients. This makes it nearly impossible for fund raisers to "climb a ladder" and many of them wind up with no where to go.
