When it comes to the American health care system, there's plenty of room for improvementbut there's also plenty of room for red tape, according to a new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
The report, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, notes that more than half of all hospitalizations in the US in 2014 were due to red tape, with the biggest issues being improper record-keeping and patient payment, the New York Times reports.
The authors, who hail from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, say it's time for the government and industry to work together to reduce red tape, which they call "one of the biggest barriers to reducing health care costs."
The authors, who note that more than half of all hospitalizations in the US in 2014 were due to improper record-keeping, say there's a lot of work to be done to cut down on red tape, including improving communication between doctors and patients, increasing the use of electronic health records, and making it easier for patients to request care.
