Illinois fifth-graderaime Newkirk loves science, technology, engineering, and math (STEAM) and hopes to use the $500 grant she received from the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation to do just that.
Newkirk, who's in the third grade at Jasper County School District Unit 1, tells the Southern Illinoisan that she plans to use the money to buy a tablet to help her fellow students with their math and science problems.
"I want them to be able to do more than just equations and numbers," she says.
"I want them to be able to apply what they've learned in school to real life."
The foundation's president, Alex Pleasant, tells the Southern Illinoisan that the idea for the tablet came from Newkirk's math teacher.
