Escap and Fdi Center Launch Pledge to Advance Gender Equality in Foreign Direct Investment

Some of the world's largest investment promotion agencies have agreed to work more closely with governments to promote gender equality and boost the number of women in senior positions in their firms.

The UN's Economic Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Center for Gender Innovation have launched the pledge, called the Gender Initiative for Advance Gender Equity in Foreign Direct Investment, to promote gender equality and boost the number of women in senior positions at investment promotion agencies, economic development boards, and ministries in countries seeking foreign direct investment, reports the BBC.

The goal is to increase the number of countries that require investment promotion agencies to include gender equality in their strategies and services, as well as to foster a "culture of inclusion, leadership, and empowerment for women who work in their sector," per an ESCAP press release.

The nine investment promotion agencies that have agreed to the pledge include Invest in Canada, Investment Fiji, Bhutan Invest, Board of Investments (BOI) Philippines, Sri Lanka, Board of Investments (BOI) Thailand, and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, per the BBC.

The pledge, which will be reviewed after three years, "is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage for sustainable development," the ESCAP's Laurel Broten said in a statement.
