Sylvester Cleary's poem "My America Too" has inspired countless tributes over the years, but it's a new one that's caught the attention of a western New York community foundation, the Buffalo News reports.
At the foundation's annual meeting on June 24, Cleary, secretary of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, read his "truly inspiring recitation of his original poem" to attendees, per a press release.
"We are focusing where we need to be to reach our vision of a community in which everyone prospers," says NCCF executive director Diane Hannum.
The foundation, which was incorporated in 1986, has given out more than $21 million in scholarships over the years.
The New York Times has a profile of Cleary, who lives in nearby Westfield.
