Ceo Views: The Currency of Trust

Americans' trust in the private sector is at an all-time high, according to a new report from an industry trade group.

The annual survey from the Giving Pledge finds that public trust in the private sector rose 57% this year after four years of decline, making us the most trusted sector in 2024, the Los Angeles Times reports.

In a statement, the chief executive of the Independent Sector, which is part of the Giving Pledge, says public trust "enables nonprofits to advocate for our missions, drive policy and systems change, have hard conversations, attract resources, and recruit volunteers to deepen our impact."

But he warns that "the broader context is concerning," with trust in many other sectors dropping, suggesting that Americans are approaching this election season with doubts and distrust.

For example, the trust in the military dropped 9% this year, while trust in state and local government fell 7%, according to the survey of 1,350 adults from April to June.

The survey also found that 41% of Americans believe nonprofits avoid partisan politics, down from 52% last year.

"This skepticism might stem from the belief that true nonpartisanship is impossible in an election year," the Independent Sector's statement says.

"Together, we can strengthen our sector to build a nation where all people thrive."
