Celebrating Queer Art in Detroit

Foundation: Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan

Kevin Ransom, a Detroit-area freelance journalist and art critic, has died at the age of 69, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Wayne County officials say Ransom, known for his articles on the arts and history of Detroit, died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease Tuesday at his Dearborn home.

He was found by a friend, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

According to MLive.com, police were called to Ransom's home after he failed to show up for a court appearance.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Ransom was known for writing about Detroit's arts scene for the Free Press for more than 20 years.

He was also the author of several books on the arts and history of Detroit.

He was a founding member of the nonprofit Mighty Real/Queer Detroit, which promotes positive images of the LGBTQ community.

"I hope it's the legacy I leave behind," exhibit curator Patrick Burton tells MLive.

"It's empowering, it's important work."

Mighty Real/Queer Detroit, its second biannual exhibition, features more than 170 artists from around the world.
