"Think of an artist and someone painting or acting might come to mind.
But professional artists can also be entrepreneurs," James Hart, director of social innovation, creative, and arts entrepreneurship at Southern Methodist University, tells the Dallas Morning News.
"They have to learn how to sell their creative talents for payment, and that process must be sustainable so that they can continue making art."
Here are Hart's top tips for artists: Know your superhero powers.
It's important to know your kryptonite, or weak spots, so that you can outsource tasks like bookkeeping, Hart says.
Write out a list of your strengths.
Make sure you're providing something necessary to your audience.
"It's really important to not just have a focus on yourself, but serve where there are gaps within market," Hart says.
Don't be afraid to fail.
"Everyone needs to start from somewhere," Hart says.
