"Through countless and significant financial gifts, they not only save the lives of South Carolinians, but also improve the quality of life for countless thousands of God's most vulnerable creatures' elderly, children, low-income, veterans, and animals,'' the president and CEO of the Charleston Animal Society tells WCSC.
On Tuesday, Gov.
Henry McMaster bestowed South Carolina's highest civilian honor on Hank and Laurel Greer of Seabrook Island.
The Greers have supported numerous nonprofits and hospitals in the Charleston area through both time and financial donations, including the Charleston Animal Society, the Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy, and Roper St.
Francis Healthcare.
The Greers also launched the Henry H.
and Laurel K.
Greer Foundation to provide support for philanthropic causes in the Charleston area.
Among those who nominated the Greers for the Order of the Palmetto were the Charleston Animal Society and Sen.
Tim Scott.
The Greers funded a mobile spay-neuter clinic for the shelter, which provides access to affordable spay-neuter in rural and underserved communities throughout the state.
Other contributions by the Greers include the Bear Greer Memorial Cat Sanctuary, which oversees the care and treatment of 200 feral cats.
