Coast Guard officers mentor leaders of tomorrow in the U.S. Senate Youth Program

The Department of Defense has selected three military officers to mentor the next group of high school students selected to attend the United States Senate Youth Program in Washington, DC, from March 2-9, 2024.

Lt.

Kathryn Rubio of the Coast Guard will be the senior military mentor, while Lt.

James Eggers of the Coast Guard and Cmdr.

Alexandra Miller of the Navy will be the civilian mentors, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"To me, mentoring is critical in fostering innovation by the next generation, who will ultimately lead society in solving complex social issues," Rubio, who is pursuing a master's degree in defense and strategic studies at the Naval War College, tells the Department of Defense.

The Senate Youth Program was started in 1962 by a bipartisan group of senators to give high school students the opportunity to spend a week in Washington learning from senators, cabinet secretaries, and federal agency leaders, reports the Hearst Foundations, which provides all delegate transportation expenses and pays for a $10,000 college scholarship.
