A historic church in Natchez, Miss., is getting some much-needed repair work thanks to a $150,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The money will be used to restore the steeple and windows of the 111-year-old Missionary Baptist Church, reports the Clarion-Ledger.
The church was built in the 1800s on the plot of land now occupied by Jefferson College.
The National Endowment for the Humanities, meanwhile, awarded a $1 million grant to the Mississippi Department of Archives and history to establish a preservation field school at the historic college, as well as an interpretive center to tell the story of Mississippi's cotton kingdom era.
"Here in Natchez and Adams County, we have long understood the value and importance of preserving our history' all of our historyto study, learn, and remember.
Any time our local projects receive federal funding, it's an affirmation of sorts that others see the importance and value as well," says a statement from the city of Natchez.
